Jip Spijker graduated on the “modular mask” design for the Intensive Care of UAMC Amsterdam on a non-invasive ventilation mask. Jip explored many ideas and included a tailor made cushion in one of his two final concepts. The principle is being tested and further developed by Renée Hovenier and Coen Dijkman with support of Fieldlab UPPS.
nSize has been participating in this Fieldlab project to help processing the scans and generating the required cushion part for 3d printing. A plugin for Rhino has been developed which processes the raw scan and orientates it using manual landmarks. From there it projects one of the few designs and calculates the necessary geometry. The total time to create a face mask cushion went from 30 minutes to under a minute, without any specific modelling or 3d drawing knowledge.
