The Baltic Ace sunk on the 5th of December 2012 in the North Sea some 40-50 km off the Dutch Coast in one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. The wreck was both a danger to shipping in general and an environmental Hazard. In March 2014, Rijkswaterstaat awarded contract for the complete removal of the sunken car carrier to the Dutch company Boskalis/SMIT and Mammoet Salvage BV. It was cut in eight separate pieces using a cutting wire and raised from the seabed. The recovery was completed successfully within time and budget.
To celebrate this project and illustrate the workflow we’ve printed two scale models in full-color print with the 8 pieces separately. This model is used for demonstrations and presentations. The boat has been remodeled after original CAD data, and the surface is modelled using GEOdata for an exact representation. As a giveaway we’ve printed 75 models in FDM, with magnetic joints between the 8 pieces. In total we’ve printed 1880 pieces, and assembled with 1200 magnets.
